Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd. is a leading player in the global telecom market, and serves most of the world's top 50 operators, along with over one billion users worldwide. The company has built up product portfolios including optical networks, mobile networks, broadband access and core networks, telecom value-added services and terminals.

Huawei first entered Europe in 2000. Its presence in the region has been steadily growing and it now has branch offices in 26 European countries. The European research center in Huawei Technologies Duesseldorf GmbH (HWDU) has about 60 experienced researchers/engineers and they are engaged in activities as applied research, system design and standardization for telecom systems and enabling technologies.

The optical network department of HWDU is doing research on optical switching, optical control plane, high speed transport technologies, and intelligent networks, etc. HWDU was one of the collaborating Institutes of FP6 NoE e-Photon/One+, and now is partner of FP7 STREP DICONET project and FP7 NoE BONE project.
