JSAC special on Energy-Efficiency inOptical Networks

Call For Papers:  “Energy-efficiency in Optical Networks”

Optical communications and networking technologies have been widely used in both access and backbone networks to provide a broad range of services. With the increasing concerns for environment protection and growing cost of resources, energy-efficiency emerges as a new dimension in the design of the state-of-the-art optical communication and networking technologies. It aims to achieve the best use of energy/electricity without violating pre-defined QoS requirements and operational constraints. To this end, the design should be holistic to consider implications on the entire system or network. Such systems should exhibit improved user experiences, network/carrier economics, and control/management flexibility as a result of heterogeneous system integration, end-to-end considerations, and global optimization.
Several potential research directions have been pursued in recent years to address energy-efficiency in optical communications and networking.
These research directions, either via device level manipulation, system level integration, or both, lead to many open research problems. For example, efficient network-wide resource allocation for energy-efficiency may not be achieved by only considering a single domain and a single layer. Smart sleep scheduling over specific energy-consuming modules cannot be effective without considering both hardware and software. Moreover, adaptation of transmission rate, coding scheme, and spectrum width can be viable solutions in optical long-haul and access systems in combination with intelligent hardware devices and flexible bandwidth slicing technologies.
Motivated by such a need, the special issue sets its goal as to gather articles that present recent advances in the field. We solicit original contributions in (but not limited to) the following categories:
- System architecture design for energy-efficient optical networks
- Protocol design for energy-efficient optical networks
- Cross-layer optimization for energy-efficient optical networks
- Network dimensioning, placement, and layout for energy-efficient optical networks
- New methodologies for performance analysis of energy-efficient optical networks
- Energy-efficient elastic optical transmission and networking systems
- Survivable design for energy-efficient optical networks
- Performance monitoring of energy-efficient optical networks
- Energy-efficient optical network testbeds
